CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Severe winter weather caused major traffic disruptions Sunday when two separate jackknifed semis blocked all lanes of I-57 South at Milepost 196 and Milepost 187. Because of the dual blockage, motorists traveling southbound were diverted off the interstate at Exit 203.
Emergency responders handled several other weather-related incidents throughout the region as heavy snow created hazardous driving conditions. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area if possible and to travel only when absolutely necessary until the weather event passed and road crews cleared the highways.
UPDATE AT 9:16 PM ON SATURDAY— Roadway Reopened
As of 9:16 p.m., officials confirmed that I-57 South was fully reopened after crews removed the disabled semis and cleared snow and debris. Drivers were still encouraged to use caution as winter conditions persisted across Central Illinois.
